Confused About Where To Sign Up For Waivers or Services?

Picture
Navigating through all the different websites and organizations to gather information regarding waivers and services can be very discouraging and confusing. A visit to BVCIL can help you get started on the right path. "The BVCIL provides five core independent living services (a) information and referral, (b) IL skills training, (c) peer support, including cross-disability peer support; (d) individual and systems advocacy, and (e) transitional services."  For more information, visit http://bvcil.org/

Home and Community Based Waivers

Home and Community-Based Waivers enable families to obtain long-term services in their home and community that would otherwise be provided in an institution. As part of the Social Security Act, each state has access to Medicaid funds to support these services for individuals with disabilities, including autism. The intent of this program is to help individuals that might otherwise be institutionalized lead more independent lives. Waivers allow states to cover an array of home and community-based services, such as respite care, modifications to the home environment and family training, which are not otherwise covered."- Autism Speaks website

Note: Waiting lists may be 7-10 years (or longer) so put your child on both lists immediately, even if you do not think you will need services later. You can always remove yourself from the list later or turn down services, but you cannot make up the extra years you put off signing up for services. Click here to see a breakdown of each program and what they may cover.

Beginning Sept. 1, 2016 programs and services under under DARS have been transferred to two different agencies Texas Workforce Commission and Texas Health and Human Services Commission. Your child may qualify for other programs besides CLASS and HCS. For a list of other programs available click here.
